Early and Personal Life
Andre was born in The Bronx in the City of New York, and he spent most of his childhood over there itself. His father, Bernie Harrell, worked as an employee in the produce market at Hunts Point, whereas his mother, Hattie Harrell, worked as a nurse’s aide. Andre Harrell graduated from the Charles Evans Hughes High School in 1978. When Harrell was young he was very passionate about rap music and culture, so he and his college friend, Alonzo Brown, formed a rap duo called, Dr. Jeckyll & Mr. Hyde (Harrell and Brown, respectively). The team was immensely loved and were soon in the headlines with their songs like “Genius rap” and “Am/ Pm.” But Harrell did not stop here, and he further went on to educate himself more Baruch College. He had a major in communication and business management. In 1983, Andre met Russell Simmons, who was the owner and founder of Def Jam Records, after having seen Andre’s potential, Andre was made the vice president and the general manager of rhey record label. After gaining some critical experience and knowledge about the field, Andre left Def Jam Records and founded his record label named Uptown records. Harrell’s famous discovery was, Sean puffy. Alongside wich, he also signed Bilge, who later went on to become the first female solo artist of Uptown Records. After working with multiple labels and artists, Harrell was offered a label deal with MCA Music Entertainment Group. He then renamed Uptown Records to Uptown Enterprises. Andre Harrell married his wife, Wendy Credle, but they were separated after a while due to some unknown reason, although they were still on good terms.

Andre Harrell was a gift to rap culture as he bloomed in a time when black artists found it difficult to hit the headlines.
